Another Kind of Fireworks: America and how it got that way
You think you know America? Do you? Guy Fawkes is history. The real explosion may be just around the corner.
On this momentous US Presidential Election night join Dr Andrew Wines, former College Republican, one-time progressive Capitol Hill lobbyist and current Assistant Head at CH, for a genuinely non-partisan journey through the complex depths of the American psyche. Dig beneath the surface of the headlines, sound bites and stereotypes to uncover those less self-evident truths that shape the oft-proclaimed land of the free and home of the brave. Cinema, art, literature, music and popular culture will be the lens through which religion, honour, race, ideology, governing institutions, gun rights, immigration, civil unrest, political violence, cults, conspiracy theories and toxic masculinity will be considered. Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln will come face to face with Charlton Heston, Charles Manson and QAnon.
The event is interactive, and you will be able to share your insights, ask questions and even vote. By the end of the evening you may be better able to answer Bob Dylan’s famous question, ‘Is there anything more American than America?’
